Gale Mini Monitor |

"Gale Mini Monitors"
Cheap as chips little speakers from 2005. Picked them up to connect to a Fosi amp and dac for my humble desktop PC system. I have owned a number of active speakers as well as some highly rated passive speakers over the last 20 years. These little Gale aren't going to beat the Linn speakers I owned or the B&W speakers. But they beat the £200 active speakers easily. It is a relatively neutral sounding speaker which will reveal the quality of your ...

Phase Research Model R - RT and Little D |

"Phase Research RT"
I have owned more than 1 pair of Phase Research speakers. My friends and I traded Phil Clements speakers between us. I had the Little D's then got a pair of RT's in the mid 80's from a friend who knew the sales rep who introduced us to Phil in the early 80's.
They are still working superbly 40+ yrs later. I also have a vintage pair of larger Advent speakers in utility cabinets that I had to recone the woofers to. I very very use the Advents beca...

Tannoy Ascot T145 |

"Tannoy Trump Everyone Yet Again"
Ever since the founder of Tannoy, Guy R. Fountain, created his dual-concentric drivers, in this writer's humble opinion, no other speaker manufacturer has bettered them. The Ascot T145 is no exception to this rule. In its price range of around £280 in 1979, nothing else could touch it. It's price, allowing for inflation, is the equivalent of around £1,500 in 2024, and I think it's still arguable today, that you'd be unlikely to best the Ascot f...

"A bit on the "bright" side"
After buying a freshly refurbished Denon 900V (which I gave to a friend as a present) I was blown away by the grip and control of this old Denon - I can only describe the sound as beastly... sound like it's eating those medium-sized Onkyo speakers alive.
Having bought some smaller amps here and there I needed a quick higher wattage fix for a low price and acquired a 920 from a German seller.
After setting up the "big boy" and listening a bi...

"Great speakers. Rich sound. Amazing quality."
Had these speakers since new, honestly without fault. Sound is amazing, although quite rich without eq tuning which some people might not like, but I love it. Only 2 main issues, the tweeter cones, over time, start to peel and become sticky, and are very difficult to put back if accidentally pushed in. Also, since they use regular copper speaker wire, they are quite sensitive when the cable isn't properly inserted, but that might just be for me. ...

"evaluation"
Translation: This Technics amp is amazing, I have one, never had any problems with it! Lacking a little power for my taste with these 2 x 60W (DIN), but which still works perfectly! That's for the positive And on the negative side: the terminal block for connecting the speakers, really not great, while at the time there were much better systems! I still don't understand the choice of the Technics brand at the time! (1989-1990) (Full Review) |

"Second second that"
Bought on a whim for 300 euros this year and the old review about "electrostatic tweeters". I have a pair of Quad ESL-988 and like the non-hifi treble.
Replaced the xover caps with better ones.
Lots of good bass down to about 30 Hz in my room and smooth treble, slightly boomy bass but tamed it with DSP. They're kind on the ears and non-fatiguing.

JPW Mini Monitor |

"JPW Gold Monitor speakers"
I have both the Mini and Gold monitors.
Sweet, warm and open sounding speakers great for small rooms. Bass notes are tuneful not bloated and enough weight, more than you can ask from the size of the drivers and cabinets really. I've used them with various amps, Pioneer A400, MF A1 and Jadis DA30 amps. They sounded best with the Jadis to my ears, pure class A tube sound.
Of the two the Golds sound smoother at the top end.
But the Jadis is pe...

KEF Q500 |

"Kef Q500"
Very clean sounding pair of speakers. I bought these used a year ago, to use as my music speakers in a setup which includes 2 Talk Electronics Tornado 3 monoblocks, running off a Marantz SR8002 AV amp as the pre-amp, with my surround speakers going through that (Ruark Prologue Ones, and Dialogue One as c speaker), I wasn't sure how good they would sound in comparison, but in music especially, they are very very good. The top end is so crisp and n...
